School Counseling

Mission: The mission of the School District of the Menomonie Area School Counseling Program is to ensure that ALL students will meet the academic, personal/social, and career Model Academic Standards to be successful in the 21st century global society.

Elements of the School Counseling Program:
SDMA's comprehensive school counseling program serves all students K-12.  It helps all students gain an understanding for their learning.  It encompasses a student's entire support network, including the school counselor, staff, administration, parents and community to be a part of developing the student into a successful, productive citizen.  The four main elements of the comprehensive school counseling program include:
1.    Curriculum: content delivered to all students
2.    Individual Student Planning: assist students in planning and managing their educational career development
3.    Responsive Services: address the immediate personal concerns of students
4.    System Support: includes program, staff, and school support activities

Program Outcomes:

The SDMA Comprehensive School Counseling Program encourages and promotes academic, career, and personal/social development for students in preparation for the challenges of the 21st Century. Our comprehensive school counseling program positively affects students, parents, teachers, school counselors, pupil services personnel, administrators, school boards, and the community. All stakeholders share the benefits of this organizational structure. Benefits of a comprehensive school counseling program include some of the following:
  
STUDENTS:
        promotes a rigorous academic curriculum for all students
        Relates educational programs to future sucdess
    
PARENTS/GUARDIANS:

        Develops a system for their child's long-range planning and learning
        Enables parents to access school and community resources
  
TEACHERS:    
        Provides an interdisciplinary team effort to address educational needs
        Promotes teaming to increase student achievement
  
SCHOOL COUNSELORS:
        Provides direct services to all students
        Provides a tool for program management and accountability
   
PUPIL SERVICES STAFF:
        Defines the school counseling program
        Increases collaboration for utilizing school and community resources            
   
ADMINISTRATORS:
        Provides a program promoting student success
        Monitors data for school improvement    
   
SCHOOL BOARDS:    
        Supports standards-based programming
        Assures that a quality counseling program is available to all students
   
COMMUNITY:    
        Provides increased opportunity for collaboration among counselors and business, industry, and the community as a whole.
        Provides a potential work force with decision-making skills, pre-employment skills, and increased worker maturity.

A Comprehensive School Counseling Program Model is designed to provide experiences that enrich a students' horizons. To develop the whole student, school staff members should consider the skills students need to improve themselves and the environments where students use these skills. Students need to integrate information with self-knowledge and develop skills to help them plan, make decisions, and adjust to the complex world in which they live. Students interact in three contexts: the educational environment, the family and community, and the work place. As students achieve developmental competencies, their perceptions of themselves and their opportunities should become more inclusive.
