The
School District of the Menomonie Area employs over 400 full- and
part-time people, including approximately 230 teachers, 16
administrators, and over 150 paraeducators, custodians, and other
support staff members. Even though the school district enjoys a healthy
rate of employee retention, there are often employment opportunities
available for people who enjoy working with or around children.
Because
a majority of district services follow the school calendar, much of the
hiring for contracted or permanently employed positions in our schools
occurs during the spring and summer. There are many exceptions, however,
so interested candidates are encouraged to monitor postings in local
news publications, the online Wisconsin Career Access Network (WECAN),
and the school district website.
In
addition to regular employment opportunities, our school district is
always looking for qualified substitute employees. With nearly 400
employees, subs are needed on a daily basis for a variety of reasons. It
takes a license from the state to work as a substitute teacher, but a
substitute teacher license can be obtained with fewer requirements than a
regular teaching license. In most cases, any four-year college degree
will suffice in qualifying for a short-term substitute teaching license.
There
are also several other substitute employment opportunities in the
school district that do not require a license. While substitute teachers
are paid at a rate of $100/day, substitute paraprofessionals are paid
over $12/hour, and substitute custodians, food service, and other
supervisory personnel are paid approximately $10/hour. Training is
available for all substitute positions, and having a successful
experience as a substitute employee can sometimes lead toward
opportunities for a more permanent position.
So
what can a parent or other community member do to become an employee in
the School District of the Menomonie Area? Please stop in or contact us
at the Administrative Service Center located at 215 Pine Avenue. Our
team would be happy to assist you in finding the proper information for
obtaining any necessary certification, navigating through the
application process for vacant positions, or getting you added to the
list of available substitute employees.
There
are also many volunteering opportunities available in the school
district that may be arranged by meeting with the principal at the
building of interest or by participating in the Senior Tax Exchange
Program (S.T.E.P.), which is better detailed on the school district
website. Background checks are required for all employees and
volunteers in the school district, but it does not take a perfect record
to work in many positions.*
Should
school stakeholders have any questions about our schools, or if you
have any interest in becoming a regular or substitute teacher or support
staff employee, I invite you to visit the Administrative Service Center
on Pine Avenue or contact us at 715-232-1642. More information about
our schools can be found on the school district website (www.sdmaonline.com) and on Twitter (www.twitter.com/sdmaonline).
