Winter Weather Update from the SDMA

Winter Weather Update from the SDMA
Posted on 01/24/2019

Hello SDMA Families, Staff, and Stakeholders.

As we move toward the end of January and the depth of the winter season, it is common for questions to arise related to possible school closings for inclement weather. In looking at the forecast for tomorrow morning and into next week, it appears that extra precautions may be needed to ensure the good health and safety of our students and staff.

When it comes to cold weather cancellations, I often focus my attention on the wind chill chart from the National Weather Service. Since some of our students walk to school or wait outside for the bus, we typically delay or close if the temperatures and wind chills are forecasted to be sustained in the 10-minute frostbite threshold.

It currently looks like we will most likely start on time tomorrow, but parents might want to consider talking with children about the importance of dressing appropriately and taking other sensible precautions. This includes high school students who might drive themselves to school, but don't ordinarily have jackets, hats, or gloves in their vehicle.

Please understand that there are other factors that can also impact these complicated decisions (ie. road conditions, bus issues, etc), and although we encourage all children to attend whenever school is in session, it is ultimately up to parents to decide what is safe for your child(ren).

Have a great week and stay warm!
